Variables: drag fields into any input

Variables: drag fields into any input0:59

Using variables in any workflow input, not only record fields. The example is an HTTP request sending new contacts to an outside tool: drag the contact's ID onto the end of the URL, drop the primary email into a header, switch to POST, and in Raw JSON use the variable button to put the job title inside quotes. Switching a field to Expression shows the double curly bracket path. In a run, the step's input shows the real values. Use it for API calls.

Any input in a workflow step can take a variable, not only record fields. This HTTP request sends every new contact to an outside billing tool. Open the step: on the left, the Input panel lists what the earlier steps produced. Type the start of the URL, then drag the contact's ID onto the end of it. It lands as a chip. Headers work the same way: drop the primary email into a header value. Switch the method to POST, and a body appears. In Raw JSON, use the variable button to put the job title right inside the quotes. To see the full path, switch a field to Expression. That clears the field, so drag the ID in again, and now it's written out in double curly brackets. Once the workflow is active, every run swaps in that run's real values: open a run, click the step, and its input shows the ID and email it used.
